The Code: Story of Linux documentary

For my second video review assignment on os162, I will talk about an interesting video called as "The Code: Story of Linux documentary". The video duration is 58:53, it's published by a person called Adam N. This video will tell us the history of Linux and how it change the free software movement around the world.

On September 17 1991 Linus Torvalds send the version of Linux, 0.01 , to the world via the internet. It was soon very popular around the university helsinki circle because the OS was free. Linus create Linux based on UNIX which was created by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie at AT&T Bell labs in 1969.

UNIX was in the beginning a relatively free operating system and very popular in the university circles.The philosophy of UNIX is based on two notions:
1. Everything is a file
2. When you build something you write things that are for a single purpose but to do that purpose well.

At first Linus didn't want to release Linux for free, He was thinking hard at that time for what kind of copyright that he would use until he was persuaded to release Linux under GNU General Public License (GPL). The GPL is funded by the Free software movement led by Richard Stallman. The GPL objective is prevent one person or anyone to monopolize over an important piece of technology.

The Linux version 1.0 was released in 1994 and it was a landmark to commercial use of Linux. During that time Linus Torvalds held a press conference to introduce  Linux  as an alternative OS beside DOS and UNIX especially for student since Linux doesn't have price tag on it.

The Linux development until now it seem a little odd because even though there are no hierarchy in the development of Linux, everyone can share and suggest a new idea, However not all idea will be accepted and someone must make standard in Linux in order to make sure there are no confusion and everything work properly as it should be. And that someone is Linus Torvalds since he's the one who create the first original core of Linux.

For my personal opinion, i think i really like this video since this video tell us an important part of computer history and decision because if Linus didn't release Linux under GPL at that time, everything won't be the same and the creativity of the Free software movement will probably die right now along the freedom of software.

Windows 10: Your Own Creepy Stalker

For my first video review assignment on os162, I will talk about an interesting video called as "The Tek 0191 | Windows 10: Your Own Creepy Stalker". The video duration is 57:30, it's created by a group called themselves as Crit TV. This video will tell us an interesting issue about windows 10 privacy matter issue for windows 10 users and regarding how windows 10 collect all the information inside your computer in order to make you 'convenient' using your own computer.

Windows 10 is the newest product of OS  for consumer and business purpose that come from Microsoft, it got a very interesting new feature called 'Cortana' a digital a.i that will personalize the windows 10 personal experience for windows 10 users by collecting all the data inside the user computer including every e-mail and every document that the user write in order to create a unique profile for every user of windows 10.

Microsoft state in Term of service windows 10 that they will collect everything the user windows 10 will do in order to personalize windows 10 experience and market their product better to their customer. Microsoft Term of service windows 10 also state that the information they collect can also be shared to 'some' 3rd party such as government or probably some of Microsoft partner in order to visualize their customer need better.

The main problem with Cortana it's always got installed in windows 10 whether you want it or not which somehow force the windows 10 user to have live account in order to have fully experience windows 10 features  and let Cortana collect you personal data.

Cortana is not the only privacy matter in windows 10 because there's also another feature inside windows 10 BitLocker app that can make some windows 10 user worrying. BitLocker always backup windows 10 user decryption disk key into OneDrive which is really worrying because if the user OneDrive account got hijacked by some hacker, The hacker can easily retrieve the BitLocker decryption disk key from OneDrive and use it to decrypt the user disk.

In my opinion I'm really enjoying this video because it talk a new urgent privacy matter issue on windows 10. It also arise my awareness about privacy matter in software and make me to always check and read the Term of service or the Term of usage software before using the software in order to ensure that if the software collect my personal data i know which data will they collect and whether the data will be shared to 3rd party or not.
